The Textbook Buyer is a classified position and reports to the Director. The Textbook Buyer will be responsible for coordinating with instructional staff the text books needed for a large campus bookstore; Use independent judgment in the purchasing of text books, supplies, materials, and/or equipment for the campuses bookstores. In addition, the Textbook Buyer will monitor store inventory and determine when to initiate purchases in accordance with bookstore procedures and coordinate merchandise flow through departments.

• Maintain communication and customer service functions with college divisions, publishers' representatives, wholesalers, other bookstores, and students

• Coordinate ordering, receiving, merchandising and inventory of textbooks and instructional materials

• Work closely with receiving and shipping staff to maintain an adequate textbook inventory at all times

• Report to the Bookstore Assistant Manager the development of schedules for textbook requisitions, placing orders, receiving textbooks, and inventory levels

• Operate the computerized textbook process using Sequoia Retail Services

• Prepare purchase orders with pricing information for all textbooks and instructional materials

• Prepare all textbook invoices for payment

• Work with the Assistant Manager and Receiving Clerk in developing and improving policies and procedures

• Prepare buy-back list for buyer and wholesaler

• Work with Assistant Manager in preparation of the textbook sales floor for each quarter

• Serve as back-up support in any and all functions of the store operation as assigned by the director and assistant manager



• One year of experience in book purchasing or equivalent qualifications

• Knowledge of Sequoia or comparable inventory control and point-of-sales software

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office, such as Outlook, Excel and Word

• Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups, both orally and in writing

• Ability to interpret and analyze inventory data

• Effective customer service skills

• Ability to work effectively with a diverse population

• Ability to lift 50 lbs


• College book-buying experience

• Experience in accounting for and volume purchasing in a large bookstore environment
