Bookstore Manager, Flathead Valley Community College

Location: Kalispell, Montana

Job Status: Full-Time, Exempt

Salary: $36,000 - $48,000 depending on education and experience; full-time, benefit eligible

  • Provides visionary leadership and directs the day to day operations in the administration, management, operations, and strategic planning efforts of the campus bookstore
  • Develops, implements and sustains comprehensive guidance, support, and excellent customer service to the student, faculty, staff and customers of the bookstore
  • Serves in a leadership role to bring together the bookstore and departments to collaborate on initiatives for students
  • Promotes a culture of leadership within a collaborative, team-oriented environment; supervises, recruits, develops, motivates, and evaluates a team in alignment with job expectations, professional roles, and the College mission
  • Collaborates closely with the Marketing department on retail merchandise, image, logos and marketing trends to appeal to customer base
  • Provides a broad range of financial and support operations including, but not limited to, budget, inventory, purchasing, auditing, revenue tracking, internal reporting, forecasting, calculating return on investment/profit, and other activities related to the administration of the bookstore
  • Researches, analyzes and resolves issues that arise in the bookstore and addresses them proactively
  • Leads in the development of a climate that promotes and supports innovation and improved services to students, faculty, and the community. Identifies and recommends new and emerging technologies, as well as relevant applications of present systems
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships and networks with vendors.
  • Develops and completes special projects as directed
  • Performs other related duties as a successful member of the Business Services team
  • Reports to the VP of Finance/Administration


  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and a minimum of two years of increasingly responsible supervisory, managerial, fiscal, and educational experience; OR,
  • Associate’s degree in a related field and a minimum of four years of increasingly responsible supervisory, managerial, fiscal, and educational experience


  • Experience in merchandise retail/web marketing
  • Experience in higher education setting
  • Experience working with Open Educational Resources (OER)


  • Working knowledge of general business practices, internet sales, and point of sale systems
  • Ability to provide quality customer service and collaboration by creating a welcoming and supportive environment
  • Demonstrated skill in creating and managing a work climate of collaboration, collegiality and team work
  • Ability to think critically and creatively, have a high standard of integrity, and be motivated to incorporate best practices into the organizational culture

  • Ability to occasionally work non-traditional schedules for events, including evenings, weekends, holidays, etc.

  • This is a Medium Duty job, according to the Selected Characteristics of Occupations Defined in the Revised Dictionary of Occupational Titles, U.S. Department of Labor and Industry.    Medium Duty involves exertion of 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10-25 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds continuously to move objects.

Under the direction of Bookstore management, organize and purchase a broad spectrum of goods and services for resale to serve the needs of the students, staff, and faculty of the College’s campuses. Willing to work in a fast paced, ever changing progressive workplace. Willing to work flexible hours based on seasonal needs. Extensive personal contacts are required with College staff, students, and faculty as well as with a wide range of vendors. Highly developed communication skills are required to negotiate and consult with vendors and campus stakeholders. Incumbent is expected to function independently. 


These qualifications, skills and abilities are critical for success in this position. 
Throughout the screening process, you will be evaluated based on the demonstration of these qualifications.

Experience beyond the minimums as a buyer within a College store with an emphasis on purchasing general merchandise for resale.
Experience working with the MBS system .
Established relationships with a wide range of vendors serving the college market.
Knowledge of art supplies 
Experience with web design and upkeep an asset.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

High school diploma or equivalent two years of training or college level course work with emphasis in Business Administration or related area and demonstrated knowledge of materials purchased and sources of supply (experience performing the duties of the position may substitute for the training or college-level course work on a year-for-year basis).

Two years experience in purchasing or buying in a public institution or in a specialized field requiring technical understanding of the items being purchased. 

Effective human relations skills required to work with vendors and others. Basic Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivable knowledge; accurate keyboarding and 10-key skills.
